Wireless Security
What does this all do?
Wireless network transmissions can be detected by anyone within range of the transmission source, which is roughly a city block. Height, output power and buildings all
affect the range of the transmissions, and they can be amplified or distorted by bouncing off buildings.
Can you see the data?
In some cases, yes. Networks which do not use encryption can be seen by anyone passing by. A lot of technical data is included, but human readable data is translated and
listed.
You can really see EVERYTHING?
Yes. Without encryption I can see everything. What exactly is everything you ask? If I or someone is watching as your check your email they will capture your username,
password, and see EVERY email that is pulled from the server. They will know which ones you deleted and also see your reponse to each one as well.....and thats just the
beginning!
My network is listed and you can see my data. Help!
As you are typing right now people can be monitoring your usage and seeing everything being done (even the stuff the computer does by itself). You should contact me as soon
as possible to discuss securing your network.
My network is listed but it's encrypted.
Encrypted networks can still be detected. It's much harder--but not impossible--to see the data from those networks. Anything under 64-bit encryption can be unencrypted in
about an hour.
I have a network in the area you monitored and didn't find myself.
There are two ways to detect networks: listen for transmissions or send hello messages to get responses from networks. In these trips, it was just listening. Unless your
access point actively sends out beacons or there was network activity, your network would not show up. Also, your network may be listed but showing under a different
name. In that case, it would be listed under the default name and not bear any upfront identification.
Are you a hacker?
By no means. Occasionally I'll hop on an open network and borrow your internet connection if I want to check something online, but in no way should network
stumbling/sniffing be considered a hostile intrusion. Don't forget that I'm not the only person with the technology and other people may not be doing it in good faith.
I want a wireless network for my home/business.
